That statement – I have heard it before…many times. TOO many times used in the WRONG way!
That statement is often used to justify why the nonprofit sector should begin paying more attention to issues of racial and ethnic diversity.
That statement sounds to me like: The room is getting crowded. We’re going to start bumping elbows soon. You might as well introduce yourself to the person beside you.
That statement assumes that the best reason to get involved with issues of diversity is because of population growth.
That statement diminishes the complicated issues of diversity into a simple statistic.
That statement ignores the nuanced character of the nonprofit sector – the sector that is responsible for birthing both the Civil Rights Movement and the Ku Klux Klan.
That statement does not represent why I care about issues of diversity or why I think the nonprofit sector should begin paying more attention to issues of racial and ethnic diversity.
That statement is more harmful than helpful.
