When I hear fellow fundraisers negatively discussing social media, I am concerned by what I hear!

My hope and prayer is that my colleagues in the field will learn to appreciate social media as a critical tool for:  communicating with donors, recognizing donors, and conducting prospect research on donors.  Social media can help us become better fundraisers!

Social media is one tool of many that fundraisers can leverage for communication with donors.  Other tools include: the telephone for making calls, a car for traveling to face-to-face meetings, the postal system for delivering materials, and email for sending messages!  Just like these other tools, social media is a vehicle for connecting with prospective donors, current donors, lapsed donors and other important constituent groups.  Consider the friendly conversations on Facebook – just one example!

Social media is one tool of many that fundraisers can leverage for recognition of donors.  Other tools include:  events with award ceremonies, facilities with naming rights, websites with donor lists, and annual reports with giving summaries.  Just like these other tools, social media is a vehicle for publicly thanking donors for their involvement and their generosity.  Consider the ability to mention a person on Twitter – just one example!

Social media is one tool of many that fundraisers can leverage for conducting prospect research on donors.  Other tools include:  wealth screening reports, insights provided by contacts, and property records publicly available. Just like these other tools, social media is a vehicle for gathering information about individuals.  Consider the detailed data documented on a LinkedIn profile – just one example!

How else can social media help fundraisers?  Please leave a comment with your idea!
