Myth #6: Networking is for the good old boys, and I’m not a part of that and don’t want to be.
Sure, professional circles can seem inbred and unfair.
But your professional circles don’t have to be an exploitation of power!
Focus your networking on building authentic relationships with trusted colleagues – not on back room deals or workplace gossip.
Build some substance:
- Volunteer for an extra project at work – it is a chance to get to know different people while getting great work done
- Serve on a nonprofit board – get involved in committee tasks and get to know others
- Co-present with a colleague at a speaking engagement
*I’ve found that working alongside someone gives you great insight into their skills, knowledge, and professional preferences.
So, build your contacts as you build your portfolio; collaborate and your network will grow.
