Myth #4:  Focus your networking in your industry.

Sure, it is important for you to know who’s who in your specific field.

But don’t stop there!

It’s smart to be connected to different types of people representing different professions.  These individuals will have significantly different knowledge bases, networking contacts, and professional perspectives.  What a great resource!

Here’s what you can do:

  • Reach out to people from various industries and sectors
  • Build your network across demographics of race, age, gender, religion, and other characteristics

*I never know what future project I may be working on and what specific assistance I may need from what contact with a completely different skill set than me.

So, proactively build up diversity in your network.
