I am currently completing one of the most challenging projects of my professional and academic career. It is called Capstone, and it is the required culminating experience for graduate students at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) of Indiana University (IU) at the Indianapolis campus (IUPUI).
Working with four colleagues, we are developing marketing strategies for Indianapolis neighborhoods. Our recommendations will be provided to the Mayor of Indianapolis – in the form of an oral presentation, an executive summary, and a final report.
This project is informed by several research methods:
- Literature review of existing research
- Interviews with more than 25 key leaders and organizations
- Review of local publications
- Attendance at community events
- Survey of Central Indiana residents
- Assessment of other cities’ neighborhood marketing strategies
If you are a resident of Marion County or the Surrounding Counties, I encourage you to participate in the survey. More than 450 of your neighbors already have! It only takes 5 minutes to complete. It is quickly accessed at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/inner.
Then, after completing the survey, take a couple minutes and ask your friends and colleagues to participate, too. Remember, our recommendations to the Mayor are dependent upon your perspective. Your opinion will make our project better.
As you can imagine, I have learned a lot about Indianapolis neighborhoods, the marketing of places, and community-based initiatives. I have also learned a lot about myself and my professional preferences. Soon, I will post these new perspectives!
