In celebration of the graduation season and in honor of everybody wearing their caps and gowns…
Like most young people in college, I didn’t know what type of job was right for me. I knew I wanted to help people, but I wasn’t sure what career path was the best match.
So, I tried an internship program with a community organization. During that experience, I discovered the wonderful world of grant writing and was introduced to the career opportunities available in the nonprofit sector.
My internship taught me how important it is for a nonprofit to have an effective fundraising strategy. And, I realized how I could put my skills and knowledge to good use: by cultivating financial support for a deserving organization.
I was certain that the nonprofit sector was right for me! So, I went after fundraising jobs, building up my experience. I even decided to go to graduate school for a master’s in nonprofit management.
More than 5 years later, I still look back at my internship experience as a complete life-changer. Because I was willing to try something new, I was able to discover something that seemed relevant to who I am and what I care about.
