Most of my posts focus on professionalism in the nonprofit sector, but this is not the end of the story.  In our sector, it is all about the cause.  Nonprofit organizations are living, breathing missions.  A mission reflects a particular worldview and a desire for a certain vision to become a reality.

So, nonprofit professional, what are your passions?

I suggest the following framework for determining the scope of your interest in nonprofit causes.  Organize different missions within these categories:

  1. Definitely – I care so much about this mission.  I even volunteer for and donate to this cause.
  2. Just Okay – Not my absolute favorite, but I think it is a valid issue.  I understand the need.
  3. No way – This mission is definitely not for me.  It is in direct conflict with my worldview and passions.

By categorizing different nonprofit missions, this will help you determine who you do and do not want to work or volunteer for.

I’d love to hear about your “definitely” mission.  Please leave a comment with your favorite cause!
