“Because if once the world forgets evil, evil is reborn.” The Crisis 1919

In reflection, I consider the weightiness of our nation’s violent history of slavery, racism, white supremacy, and discrimination. Individual people were not treated as free. Families were not free. Generations were not free. Communities were not free. Pure evil has reigned in our nation’s history.

And then we (white people) erroneously expect that we can live in a colorblind society now. We assume that race doesn’t matter anymore. We think that achievements are based on merits not institutional infrastructure and cultural contexts that are set up for one group to succeed and one group to fail.

The evil of slavery, racism, white supremacy, and discrimination cannot be forgotten. Because if we forget, we are bound to repeat the evil. Case in point? The upsurge in KKK activity recently…
